Just as Liverpool fans were starting to fear their club will begin the 2018-19 campaign with Loris Karius as their first-choice goalkeeper, news emerged on Tuesday that the Reds have submitted a £62 million offer for AS Roma’s Alisson Becker.

Alisson, who is Brazil’s number one ahead of Manchester City’s Ederson, is widely regarded as one of the best keepers in Europe right now.

The 25-year-old was outstanding for Roma last season, playing 37 Serie A matches while making a further 12 appearances in the Champions League.

Immediately after Karius’s disastrous performance in May’s Champions League final against Real Madrid, speculation was rife that Klopp would attempt to sign a new No. 1 this summer.

Two months have passed since then and Liverpool hadn’t made a formal move for any keeper until now.

Klopp clearly feels that Alisson would be value for money, even if it means breaking the world record fee for a goalkeeper.

The current record stands at £35 million, set by Manchester City in June 2017 when they signed the aforementioned Ederson.

Liverpool’s offer is, according to BBC Sport, £4 million lower than the fee Roma want for the South American shot-stopper.

However, they may need to cough up the £66 million if they’re to beat Chelsea to Alisson’s signature. The Blues, who may allow Thibaut Courtois to join Real Madrid, are understood to be keen on the Brazil international.

On Monday evening, hours after the news of Liverpool’s bid was reported, Twitter user ‘Alison Becker’ posted a tweet which got many supporters excited.

“Excited to announce that I will be joining Liverpool as a goalkeeper!” they tweeted.

However, a quick glance at the profile photo made it clear this tweet was definitely *not* sent by the Roma goalkeeper.

Instead, it was sent by his near-namesake (notice the one ’s’ in ‘Alison’), a lady who lives in Los Angeles, who decided to have a bit of fun at the expense of Liverpool fans.

Even the Reds’ faithful held their hands up and admitted this was pretty funny…

Fair play for taking it in the spirit it was intended, Liverpool fans.

It might not be too much longer before the real Alisson Becker is tweeting something similar.
