Unsurprisingly, AJ Styles defeated Rusev at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view on Sunday night to retain the WWE Championship.Although there was always doubt in the back of the mind that the company could pull out with another Jinder Mahal surprise, the expectation was that the title wouldn't change hands.

WWE CHAMPIONSHIP

Quite frankly, it didn't make sense to do that.

Shinsuke Nakamura would have been the perfect heel to snatch the gold from The Phenomenal One, but the WWE opted against that when their rivalry ended at Money in the Bank.

Along with this, the fact that AJ Styles is the cover star for WWE 2K19 means it's highly unlikely that the title will switch hands anytime soon when the promotional duties start relatively soon.

Despite that, the focus is now on SummerSlam next month and who the next challenger could be.

Based on images and adverts that have been circulating already, it may have already been revealed that Samoa Joe will be Styles' next challenger.

Adverts have also suggested Styles and Joe will do battle at Hell in a Cell, too.

However, following this week's episode of SmackDown LIVE, fans on Twitter have an entirely different opponent in mind for the WWE Champion.

As we saw on Tuesday night, Styles went up against Andrade 'Cien' Almas in the opening contest, and fans were left incredibly impressed.

EL IDOLO VS. THE PHENOMENAL ONE

Almas, who has had quite a sluggish start to life on the blue brand, followed up his impressive matches with Sin Cara by diving head-first into a highly anticipated contest against Styles.

In what can be considered a sink or swim situation against one of the best in the world, El Idolo left a brilliant impression with some fans on Twitter hoping WWE decides to give him the WWE Championship opportunity at SummerSlam, instead of Joe.

Nobody can blame WWE fans for wanting this to happen, as a longer match between the pair is guaranteed to steal the show, while it also cements Almas' status as a top heel on SmackDown as opposed to being stuck in the mid-card.

His rise to the potential main event scene has been incredible, especially since he wanted to leave WWE at one stage after a rocky start to life on NXT.

Zelina Vega has been a breath of fresh air to his character, and going down this route instead wouldn't be a terrible alternative.
