Ian Poulter produced an incredible shot in the first round of The Open Championship

With his eccentric personality and flashy attire, Ian Poulter is one of the most noticeable figures in professional Golf.

Once ranked number five in the world, the 42-year-old finds himself slumped down in 29th position in 2018, with five other Brits in-front of him, including Rory McIlroy and perhaps the sport's newest rising star, Tommy Fleetwood.

For a man of Poulter's stature in the game, it's perhaps surprising that he's only managed to achieved three wins on the PGA Tour in his 22-year career, but he's had considerably more success on the European Tour, where he's achieved 12 victories.

The Open Championship marks the major that Poulter has achieved his best career-finish at, where he gained second-place honours to Padraig Harrington at Royal Birkdale in 2008.

Poulter hasn't finished in the top 10 of a major since tying for sixth position at the 2015 Masters though, so a positive showing at The Open wasn't on the forefront of the golfing public's minds.

In the first round of the 2018 edition this week at Carnoustie in Eastern Scotland, Poulter finished two shots over par, which isn't terrible in the grand scheme of things at a course that has sometimes being nicknamed 'Car-nasty', especially for it's difficult final three holes.

Despite not making par for the round, Poulter did manage to produce a simply stunning shot that when seen, you won't believe it's landed where it has.

It's not only luck to divert over the water like that, but to bounce out of the bunker like that as well?

Simply ludicrous.

Sadly though it looks like Poulter's tournament will be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

At the time of writing, Poulter was 17 holes into his second round, with a shocking score of 8-over-par, including five bogeys and two double bogeys, leaving him on +10 overall.

Better luck next time, Ian.
