Manchester United kicked off their pre-season tour with a 1-1 draw against Club America on Thursday night.

Jose Mourinho's side had to come from behind in Arizona after Henry Martin broke the deadlock on 59 minutes.

Missing a number of key players, Man United salvaged a result with a late Juan Mata equaliser after some excellent wing play by 18-year-old Tahith Chong.

"Tahith was good," Mourinho said. "He came with the intention to show himself and in a moment when we had no strikers on the pitch, after Anthony Martial had left, we needed people to create and have some initiative, which he did.

"The action for the cross which led to the goal was beautiful. He was enthusiastic and he had the confidence to play."

The Red Devils will play San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday before facing AC Milan, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

It's going to be a busy couple of weeks in the USA.

Man Utd's worrying midfield

Scott McTominay, Ander Herrera and Andreas Pereira featured in a midfield trio against Club America.

However, one Man United fan on Twitter - who was live tweeting during the game - spotted something a little worrying late in the second half.

That really doesn't look good - where is the midfield?

Pep Guardiola led Manchester City to the title last season with his unique brand of free-flowing attacking football.

And Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino, Unai Emery and Maurizio Sarri are expected to produce entertaining football this season.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is renowned for his defensive style and no-one is expecting the Portuguese coach to suddenly introduce expansive football at Old Trafford.

McTominay, Herrera and Pereira aren't expected to be in the starting XI this season but Man United are currently without players who featured at the World Cup.

Club record signing Paul Pogba proved that he's an incredible midfielder in Russia this summer and £52m was splashed out on the signing of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

“Fred, you know we did it quite a long time ago, we started the process a long time ago,” Mourinho said in Los Angeles.

“We lost Michael Carrick, we think Fred is the kind of player we need to complement the qualities of our midfield players.”

Man United are still looking for their first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
