Liverpool fans have now had four friendlies by which to judge Naby Keita. So far, the Guinea international has made a very good impression, most recently with his commanding performance in midfield against Blackburn.Of course, there's only so much you can tell about new signings from pre-season but the Anfield faithful have had a long time to get excited about the 23-year-old.Former manager Gerard Houllier initially recommended him when he was lighting up the Bundesliga during RB Leipzig's title challenge in 2017.By then, it was already apparent that Jurgen Klopp needed to bring in more manpower in the middle of the pitch and that need has only increased with Emre Can's switch to Juventus. There is ultimately a great deal of expectation following Keita - who scored nine goals and assisted a further seven in all competitions last season - and particularly after he was handed the no. 8 shirt.Steven Gerrard was the last player to don the famous jersey and most players would be daunted by following in the footsteps of the greatest Liverpool player of the modern day. However, Keita has spoken of the moment he was handed the shirt by the man himself at Melwood, and Gerrard handled the situation perfectly.

Keita's moment with Gerrard

"It was a surprise [seeing Gerrard]" he said, via the Daily Mail.

"When I came here that day I didn’t know Steven would be at Melwood. It was exciting to be presented with the shirt by him.

"I watched him when I was growing up. I’m a midfielder and Steven was always the boss of the team, so I couldn’t be anyone else but Steven Gerrard when I played.

"I admired him so that was a special day. He told me, 'Everyone will be here for you. We will help you.'"

"Going back to my childhood, eight is a number I always liked. Dad wore it when he played and I’m aware it’s a big number here at Liverpool.

"But I am not going to put extra pressure on myself. I’m focusing on contributing for this team."

The story of Keita's progress from playing on the streets of Guinea to joining the Champions League finalists is becoming increasingly well-known, but it's refreshing to hear such a top player revelling in meeting one of his idols.

If he can enjoy half the career Gerrard had on Merseyside, his £48million fee will look like a shrewd bit of business.
