The Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs pulled off the blockbuster trade of the summer as they exchanged All-Stars Kawhi Leonard and DeMar DeRozan this week.Leonard's days with the Spurs were numbered after he requested a move and fell out with the organisation but Toronto's decision to offload DeRozan came as a shock.Just two years ago, the shooting guard committed his future to the franchise as he re-signed in free agency on a five-year, $139 million contract.

Loyalty

He took no meetings with other teams as he was determined to continue playing for the Canadian outfit for much of his career.

The 28-year-old spent his entire nine-year NBA stint with the Raptors and is the team's all-time leading scorer.

He has been responsible for the best period in the team's history and his departure will be hard for many fans to take.

But nobody has taken the news of the trade harder than DeRozan himself as he hit out at the Raptors on social media for being disloyal.

On an Instagram post, the All-NBA swingman wrote, "told one thing but the outcome another".

This appears to confirm a report that the four-time All-Star had a meeting with team officials last week and was told he wouldn't be traded.

Addressing the trade in public for the first time, president Masai Ujiri looked to clear things up during a press conference on Friday and offered an apology to DeRozan.

"I want to not only apologise to DeMar DeRozan for maybe a gap of miscommunication but also to acknowledge him and what he's done here with the Raptors, for this city, for this country. There's no measure to what this kid has done," he said, via Bleacher Report.

This apology may not have gone down well with DeMar as he took to Instagram again to post a subtle response.

Ujiri certainly doesn't deny that he had a conversation with the guard but he regrets the nature of what they discussed and he believes he could've handled it better.

"I had a conversation with DeMar at summer league, and I really want to leave it at that," Ujiri said, per ESPN.

"We spoke ... I think maybe my mistake was talking about what we expected going forward from him.

"So, not necessarily talking about a trade but what I expect from him going forward, and I think that's where the gap was."

The Raptors offloaded Jakob Poeltl and a 2019 first round pick to the Spurs as part of the deal and also got Danny Green in return.

If Leonard gets back to his best, it'll allow fans in Toronto to quickly get over the loss of DeRozan but his legacy with the franchise will never be forgotten.
