Wayne Rooney must have thought this MLS lark would be pretty straightforward after he made his DC United debut against Vancouver Whitecaps last weekend. The 32-year-old, who left Everton after just one season back at his boyhood club, entered the fray with half-hour to go and provided an assist 20 minutes later.DC United recorded a 3-1 victory at their newly opened Audi Field stadium in the process and gave themselves hope of dragging themselves off the foot of the Eastern Conference.Rooney then went on to make his first start for his new employers on Saturday evening away at Atlanta United. However, DC United now find themselves cut further adrift at the bottom of their league table after suffering a 3-1 defeat.Rooney’s new team took a surprise lead in the 8th minute through Zoltan Stieber, but a hat-trick from Josef Martinez earned the hosts all three points. As for Rooney, well, he had a night to forget.

The clips that sum up Rooney's first start for DC United

Manchester United and England’s all-time record goalscorer endured a bit of a nightmare, in fact, and was duly subbed off by his manager Ben Olsen with around 25 minutes left to play.

Rooney’s worst moment came in the 30th minute when he played a sloppy pass which resulted in Atlanta’s equalising goal.

He was also shown a yellow card for lashing out at an opponent in the 50th minute. This situation could have ended worse for the Premier League legend but the referee took a somewhat lenient view.

While his evening was summed up by this free-kick and woeful follow-up shot.

Oh, Wazza. Turns out that MLS is actually a very competitive league these days.

Superstars who view America’s top flight league as a chance to wind down their careers and earn one last big pay cheque are in for a nasty surprise.

In total, Rooney managed just two shots against Atlanta - and you can see all of his touches from the match here…

In fairness to Rooney, though, he hasn’t had a proper pre-season, so it’s no real surprise that he’s still lacking sharpness.

Then again, when was the last time we saw a truly sharp Wayne Rooney?

You have to wonder how much he’s got left in the tank.
