The pressure is on Jose Mourinho to deliver this season.

His Manchester United side finished second in the Premier League last season, twenty points behind rivals Manchester City.

The 2018/19 season will be Mourinho's third season in charge at Old Trafford.

In his bid to challenge Pep Guardiola's Man City, the Red Devils splashed out £52m on Brazilian midfielder Fred.

They've also brought in teenage Porto full-back Diogo Dalot and back-up goalkeeper Lee Grant.

But fans are still expecting a couple of big-name signings to arrive before the transfer window closes on August 9.

We've taken a look at how Mourinho's side could line up next season.

Man United's potential XI

Could this Man United team secure a Premier League trophy for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson's era?

GK: David De Gea

In May, the 27-year-old Spanish goalkeeper was named as Manchester United's Player of the Year for a record fourth time. Despite a disappointing World Cup, De Gea is widely regarded as one of the finest stoppers in world football.

LB: Alex Sandro

The 27-year-old Juventus wing-back has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks. He's a modern full-back who knows how to defend and attack. The right-footed Ashley Young filled in superbly at left-back last season but isn't getting any younger at 33.

CB: Toby Alderweireld/Harry Maguire

Mourinho is expected to bolster his central defence despite a wealth of options at his disposal.

The Red Devils have been linked with Tottenham's Alderweireld for some time although the £50m figure being reported could be spent on England's World Cup hero Harry Maguire instead.

CB: Eric Bailly

The Ivorian centre-half was overlooked by Mourinho towards the end of last season but is regarded by fans as the best central defender at the club. Aged 24, Bailly will hope to prove his worth to Mourinho in the opening weeks of the season.

RB: Antonio Valencia

The powerful 32-year-old winger was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2009 but has since transformed himself into a world-class right-back. Mourinho recently confirmed that Valencia would be named club captain following Michael Carrick's retirement.

CM: Nemanja Matic

The defensive midfielder joined from Chelsea last summer and enjoyed an excellent debut season at Old Trafford. Mourinho appreciates all that Matic adds to his midfield and the Serb is expected to be a regular in the starting XI for the season ahead.

CM: Fred

Man Utd shelled out £52m before the World Cup to sign Fred from under the noses of rivals Manchester City. The Brazilian box-to-box midfielder earned plaudits for his performances at Shakhtar and could be United's answer to Naby Keita.

CM: Paul Pogba

The 25-year-old Frenchman is creative, powerful, skilful and is arguably one of the most capable midfielders in the world. Pogba, who struggled under Mourinho last season, was incredible at the World Cup and fans will hope that he can bring that form into the new season.

LW: Alexis Sanchez/Jesse Lingard

Sanchez only managed two league goals since swapping Arsenal for Man United in January. The Chilean took his first summer off in nine years and will hope to be back to his best when the 2018/19 season begins.

If he can't find form, Lingard will be waiting in the wings. The 25-year-old Mancunian was one of Mourinho's best performers last season.

ST: Romelu Lukaku

Signed from Everton in 2017, the Belgian striker was undroppable in his first season at Old Trafford. Lukaku scored 26 goals in all competitions last season and there are few better number 9's in world football.

RW: Ivan Perisic/Marcus Rashford

If Martial is sold, Mourinho could move for Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic. The Man United coach is a big fan of the 29-year-old winger and tried to sign him last summer.

Rashford, blessed with electric pace and stunning dribbling ability, desperately wants to be a starter at his boyhood club. It will be a scary sight for defenders if Mourinho can get his frontmen to click.
