After a brilliant run from Liverpool, the mighty Madrid had proved too much in Kiev.

Jurgen Klopp and his men had given Anfield some of their best memories for years, and while there were great times, the run also left regrets.

After two unfortunate mistakes from Loris Karius in the Champions League final cost Liverpool, it had been clear that a new goalkeeper was a likely outcome.

The Redmen played some scintillating football on the way to the final – and Kopites could have been forgiven for thinking that the German Karius represented a rare weak link in the team.

Despite this, Klopp had unconvincingly given Karius his pubic backing as No.1 for the season earlier this summer.

That is, until a new man became available.

Step forward, Alisson.

Despite the Reds knocking seven goals past then Roma keeper Alisson in the Champions League semi-final, the Brazilian was the number 1 target this summer.

Adept in his shot-stopping and with his feet, Alisson was secured for a whopping £67 million – a world record for a keeper.

The Brazil stopper’s rise has been meteoric, as Alisson broke through after warming the bench in his first campaign in Rome.

According to the Mirror today, way back in 2015, Liverpool could have signed the Brazil No.1 for a measly £4 million.

Amazingly, Liverpool would only have paid Brazilian side Internacional £3.1m up front with £900,000 in add-ons.

Liverpool and several other Premier League and Championship clubs were sent a detailed scouting dossier, urging the signature of the youngster.

There were no takers in England, and Alisson waited another year before joining Roma for £6.7 million.

They’ll be delighted to have him now, but the powers that be at Anfield will surely be kicking themselves for not securing Alisson for pittance – particularly considering Liverpool’s goalkeeper troubles over the last few years.

The Reds will hope he makes up for lost time when the season begins.
