Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was back to the top of the podium in the German Grand Prix on Sunday, which saw yet another twist to the championship race after the conclusion of the 11th round of the calendar year.Home favourite Sebastian Vettel, who was cruising ahead of his rivals from the start, retired on lap 51, aiding to the advantage of Hamilton in the process. With Hamilton chasing down Kimi Raikkonen for the lead, he endured a bit of miscommunication on the radio with the team regarding when to come in for a pit stop, as the safety car was deployed. The Silver Arrows’ ace was initially told to pit, but witnessing Raikkonen staying out, Hamilton immediately conveyed the message on the radio and cut across the pit entry, coming back on to the track. His actions had been reported to the stewards, who summoned the driver over a potential breach of rules for crossing the pit entry line.If found guilty, Hamilton could have ended up with a time-penalty, which could have dropped him down the order, also having a bearing on the Drivers’ Championship points tally.Ahead of the weekend at the Hockenheim-based circuit, FIA race notes did not make specific reference to drivers cutting back on the track.FIA International Sporting Code, Appendix L, Chapter 4, Article 4 d) states: "Except in cases of force majeure (accepted as such by the stewards), the crossing, in any direction, of the line separating the pit entry and the track by a car entering the pit lane is prohibited."Watch the video below!

The 33-year-old explained his stance on the issue as he spoke regarding the matter before the summons, admitting his strategy was to do the opposite to race leader Raikkonen in the Scuderia.

Hamilton said: “It was so confusing. We came around Turn 16, and Kimi started turning in, they had asked me to box, and I said Kimi is pitting.

“Then they said ‘stay out’. I was already in the lane and then I started turning out to go over the grass.

“Then they said ‘no stay in’, but I was already back on track.

“The reason I mention it is that there are times when you do the opposite to the car in front and I felt this was a chance to do the opposite to Kimi and gain ground on the road.

“That is why I questioned it and ultimately it turned out to be the right thing. But it was so intense and really confusing - because they were all panicking on the pit wall and I was probably the only relaxed one.”

As the racing faithful waited in anticipation to what ultimately transpired of the whole scenario, Hamilton was granted the victory after post-race investigation.

Stewards delivered a reprimand after considering the entire episode, handing Hamilton the victory.

The Brit leads the championship with 188 points, now 16 points ahead of arch-rival Vettel as we gear up for the upcoming race next weekend in Hungary.
