The rain-hit German Grand Prix on Sunday was filled with twists and drama right from start to finish as Lewis Hamilton secured his fourth win of the campaign to lead Sebastian Vettel in the championship race. After more than an hour claiming the sensation victory, on the back of a lacklustre qualifying on Saturday, Hamilton drove from 14th on the grid to the top, but was summoned by the stewards, along with Mercedes, to explain the entire scenario on lap 52 regarding the pit-lane incident. As the safety car was deployed with 15 laps remaining, the Silver Arrows instructed the reigning champion to come into the pits. However, the Brit aborted the move in the final seconds, cutting across the grass and rejoined the track, while witnessing the strategy of Kimi Raikkonen ahead in the Scuderia car.Although there were doubts raised, putting Hamilton’s win on hold for a short while, the stewards later issued a reprimand to the Mercedes ace – his first of the season.Speaking regarding the verdict of the episode, FIA race director Charlie Whiting disclosed why it took nearly 90 minutes after the conclusion of the race to begin the investigation process. The 66-year-old said, as per Sky Sports: “It just takes a little bit of time to make sure that if you're going to call a team that you have good reason for calling them.“Obviously we wanted to wait until after the race to have a look at it because we were getting quite close to the end of it and then with all the rain and the thunderstorms and everything like that, by the time everything had calmed down, had a good look at it and the stewards decided that they should, in fact, discuss it with the team.”Whiting categorically confirmed that Italian outfit Ferrari did not lodge a post-race protest against the incident.Asked if the crossing of the pit lane entry line should incur a certain penalty for the concerned driver, Whitting replied: “I don't think there is a specific precedent.“Kimi [Raikkonen], a couple of years ago in Baku got a five-second penalty, but that was quite a lot different in that particular scenario.”Here is the stewards’ verdict in full!
