Back in January 2006, The Spirit Squad made their debut on Monday Night RAW.

Formed of Kenny, Johnny, Mitch, Nicky, and Mikey, the all-male cheerleading squad were a heel faction despised by fans.

Despite drawing an insane amount of heat, they were consistently involved in the main event picture and their run consisted of working with some of the biggest names in WWE.

THEIR RUN

The Squad were working with the likes of Dusty Rhodes, Roddy Piper and Ric Flair - which for a group of young wrestlers, would have been a dream.

They also captured the World Tag Team Championships within a few months of being on the main roster.

But their success of course, didn't last forever.

BREAKING UP

After losing their titles to Piper and Flair in November 2006, the group were close to disbanding.

A few weeks later, they lost to D-Generation X and The Nature Boy in a five-on-three handicap match, which officially signaled the end of The Spirit Squad.

Nicky, Johnny and Mikey returned to Ohio Valley Wrestling (WWE's developmental territory) shortly after, while Kenny remained on the main roster and Mitch was released.

By the end of 2008, all but one member of the old faction were released.

DOLPH ZIGGLER IS BORN

As many fans know, the only surviving member of The Spirit Squad was Nicky - who was re-packaged as Dolph Ziggler in September '08.

Since his return to the main roster, The Showoff has had a lot of success, winning the Intercontinental, United States and World Heavyweight Championships as a singles competitor.

Fast forward a decade to 2018 and Ziggler is now working with Drew McIntyre and he's once again got the Intercontinental belt around his waist.

So it's fair to say he's come a long way from his Spirit Squad beginnings.

Even though he'll probably have no regrets about how he's got into his current position in WWE or the run he's had, things could have been very different for Ziggler from the very beginning.

A DIFFERENT GIMMICK

Before The Spirit Squad made their debut, Ziggler was told that WWE had quite simply, a much better plan in the works for him.

On Chasing Glory with Lilian Garcia, per Wrestling Inc, he explained that before being called up to do The Spirit Squad, WWE management mentioned another idea they had for him.

"They were like, 'hey they [WWE] really like that you have an amateur wrestling background' and I had my crew cut, my military haircut," Ziggler began.

"They go, 'it's great that you have no tattoos, we're kinda looking at you as Kurt Angle's protegee or something.'"

Seeing Ziggler work with Angle would have been pretty cool - and without a doubt, much better than seeing him in The Spirit Squad.

ANGLE'S INFLUENCE

"If Kurt Angle hadn't won that gold medal and come to WWE I might not have even got a chance," The Showoff continued.

"But because he was so good and he did so well when he got here they're like, 'maybe we can give some smaller guys a try' and because of him, I got a chance to work here.

"And they go, 'hey maybe we consider you as his protegee' and I go, 'what? This is the craziest thing ever!'

"Cut to four weeks later and I'm a cheerleader with four other guys, but still the thought was there that maybe that was gonna happen."

It's a shame that WWE's exciting plan never happened - but still, Dolph has been a mainstay in the company for the last decade, so thankfully, his debut with The Squad didn't damage his potential.
