It’s a travesty that Mesut Ozil’s illustrious international career has ended on such a sour note. The 29-year-old, who helped Germany lift the World Cup four years ago in Brazil, quit international football on Sunday after releasing a 2,320-word statement on social media.Ozil cited the "racism and disrespect" he has faced in Germany over his Turkish roots as he reason for walking away from international football and has received the support of many fans from across the world."I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose," Ozil said.Although German football officials are yet to respond to Ozil’s claims, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel said she “respects” the Arsenal player’s decision as he has done much for the national team.Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness, on the other hand, came out with a completely classless statement on Monday morning."Ozil has been playing s**t for years," he told SportBild, per the Mirror. "He won his last tackle before the 2014 World Cup."All he is doing on the field is playing cross passes. Now he hides himself and his crap performance behind this photo."

Stats emerge which suggest Hoeness is talking rubbish

However, statistics have emerged in the aftermath of Hoeness’s controversial comments which suggest he’s talking nonsense about Ozil “playing s**t for years”.

Per Opta Joe, Ozil actually created more chances (5.5) per 90 minutes than any other players at the 2018 World Cup finals.

That’s pretty remarkable considering Germany lost two of their World Cup group matches (against Mexico and South Korea) and were dumped out in the group stages.

WhoScored, meanwhile, have revealed that no player made more key passes (seven) in a World Cup match than Ozil v South Korea.

It's not fair to make Ozil a scapegoat

So, there you have it. Ozil was providing the ammunition for Germany this summer, but his teammates were failing to convert.

It wasn’t his fault that Germany suffered a humiliating group-stage exit and, subsequently, making him the scapegoat for the team’s failure is totally unfair.

Ozil was trying his best to make things happen and showcased the same creativity which has made him such a revered star of European football over the past eight years.

He is now back with Arsenal and will focus on getting himself mentality and physically prepared for the International Champions Cup.

The Gunners face Atletico Madrid in the pre-season tournament on Thursday before taking on Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

They then go head-to-head with Lazio in their final pre-season friendly before their Premier League opener against Manchester City on August 12.
