While some fans might consider his reign now long-winded or boring after his rivalry with Shinsuke Nakamura came to an end, it looks as if that could be going on for a little while longer.
Advertisements have suggested that Samoa Joe is going to challenge Styles at both SummerSlam and Hell in a Cell, while the release of WWE 2K19 suggests WWE won't have their cover star drop the title so soon to its release date.
Instead, fans on Reddit are in agreement that AJ Styles should remain as champion at WrestleMania 35 - but only if he faces John Cena.
STYLES VS. CENA FANTASY BOOKING
Reddit user 'UltimateUnknown' threw out a theory which makes perfect storytelling sense, suggesting that a lot would be on the line between another title match between Styles and Cena.
The story is that by then, Styles would be the longest-reigning WWE Champion of the modern era by then, eclipsing CM Punk as well as a longer title reign than any of Cena's 16 world title reigns.
A potential match would see Cena competing to break Ric Flair's record and capture world title number 17, while Styles would look to continue his own legendary title reign.
Along with this, Styles and Cena are 2-2 in singles competition, and this guaranteed main event-worthy match could be the tie-breaker to finally determine who the better man really is.
To step it up a notch, it could even feature Cena's career on the line, especially since he's already competing on a part-time basis and it's an ideal way to phase out at the top.
Evidently, it's all fantasy booking at this point, but the reactions on Reddit suggest that it's a storyline the fans could get behind as it's something that sells itself.
They're two of the all-time greats, there could be a championship, a record, a streak and a career on the line all in one go.
In recent memory, there's nothing quite like this in regards to there being so much on the line.
It would only be fitting to happen at the Grandest Stage of Them All, too.
