It's been a difficult summer for Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius. The 25-year-old German stopper made two calamitous errors in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in May.He was in tears on the pitch in Kiev at the full-time whistle.Karius returned for Liverpool pre-season at the beginning of July and it appeared that Jurgen Klopp was going to give him the chance to retain the number 1 shirt. However, it's evident that Karius has not yet recovered from his Champions League final nightmare.Fans spotted an embarrassing gaffe in the warm-up ahead of the 7-0 friendly win over Chester and - just a matter of days later - he gifted Tranmere a goal with a mistake.Liverpool responded by splashing out a world-record £67m fee to sign Roma goalkeeper Alisson. On Sunday night, Karius made a couple of errors in the 3-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Charlotte, USA."To those who take joy in seeing other people fail or suffer, I feel for you,” Karius wrote on Instagram after losing to Dortmund.“Whatever it is that's happening in your life to hold this much anger and hate, I pray that it passes and good things come to you."Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah was the first player to come out in defence of Karius on social media. The Egyptian winger posted a touching message on Monday lunchtime.

Salah wrote: "Stay strong Karius, it has happened to the best of players. Ignore those who hate.@LorisKarius."

He's one of the classiest players around and Karius will be very grateful for Salah's public defence.

Despite signing Alisson to replace Karius between the sticks, Klopp still believes the German has a role to play on Merseyside.

The Liverpool manager said, as per Sky Sports: "Obviously Alisson is a world-class goalkeeper, so we're not going to say 'let's have a look'. He will play, of course.

"When Alisson is ready, he will be in our goal. We all need to help him so he can perform as good as possible. That is maybe the only difference.

"But for that to happen we need a strong squad around him and Loris is an outstanding goalkeeper. That's the truth. Nothing else."

Alisson is expected to make his Liverpool debut against Napoli in Dublin's Aviva Stadium on August 4.
