One spectator got more than they bargained for during the final day of The Open at Carnoustie on Sunday.

Tiger Woods put in a very respectable performance at this year's competition, finishing tied for sixth at five-under par with fellow American Kevin Chappell and Englishman Eddie Pepperell.

However, his weekend may be best remembered for one of his poorer shots.

As Woods played his approach shot on the 11th, one fan decided to film it on his phone.

Woods’ shot was far from his finest, however, as he skewed it into the onlooking crowd.

Remarkably the ball bounced straight into the phone of the unlucky fan Colin Hauck, knocking it out of his hands as it filmed the whole affair.

Hauck uploaded the footage to Twitter after the incident, and it's safe to say it's gone viral since.

It shows the fans initially seeming to lose sight of the ball before a flurry of activity as they all tried to get out of the way upon realising the ball was headed their way.

The phone then tumbles to the floor and we hear the relieved fans laughing after their close shave.

When Tiger came over to the group to apologise for his wayward shot, the fan’s fortunes turned as the 14-time major champion signed a glove and gave it to his compatriot who came all the way from the US to Carnoustie to watch him play.

He told Hauck he was 'a good American,' before shaking his hand.

The tournament was eventually won by Italian Francesco Molinari, who finished on eight-under, two shots ahead of American Kevin Kisner.

With his two-under final round of 69, Molinari became the first man from Italy to win a major.

Home favourites Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose finished tied on six under par, whilst Jordan Spieth finished four shots off the pace.
