Fernando Alonso and his pit crew were heard having a heated disagreement about tyre strategy over their radio during the German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring. The Spaniard felt that his team called him in “way too early” to switch to intermediate tyres when rain hit the track.Alonso was adamant that the tyres would be “destroyed in the dry parts” and soon after the change was quick to make the team aware that he felt he was right.“Bad luck for inters, man. I tell you when to stop,” he told the team over radio.“Tyres are destroyed. So, yes, now when it rains and everyone stops, tell me and we’ll stop again.”Alonso then pitted again to switch for dry weather tyres and at that point was no longer in with a chance of securing any points.Later on as the rain returned, the team asked what he thought about pitting again to switch back to intermediate tyres, to which Alonso responded that he was ok on the drys and stayed out. With points out of the question, towards the end of the race the team discussed whether it was worth Alonso staying out.Initially, Alonso was happy to do so, saying “we are last, so I don’t care”. However, Alonso eventually retired on lap 65.

“They told me to retire the car and come slow,” explained the Spaniard after the race.

“Probably they saw something on the data.”

The team said they retired his car due to concerns over his gearbox.

“We bet on the rain, we changed to intermediate tyres when it was still dry, and we killed the tyres on the dry track,” said Alonso.

“It was a gamble race and at the end we didn’t score points but happy anyway.”

Once again, another nightmare week for Fernando Alonso and McLaren.
