This season is mightily important for Liverpool Football Club.

The Reds have the potential to be a really successful team, with Jurgen Klopp splashing the cash to turn his squad into fully-fledged contenders.

More than £150 million has been spent on acquiring the players Liverpool need to go toe-to-toe with Manchester City.

Alisson spares Liverpool the risk of having Loris Karius in goal and Xherdan Shaqiri offers some much-needed depth in attack.

Meanwhile, Naby Keita and Fabinho bolster a midfield which has been impacted by Emre Can’s departure and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s long-term injury.

Liverpool may have failed to land a trophy last season but their progress was evident.

An appearance in the Champions League final may just be a sign of things to come for the Reds.

Klopp's prediction to Coutinho

Klopp, who replaced Brendan Rodgers in October 2015, saw it coming all the way.

JOE’s Melissa Reddy has penned a detailed account into the workings behind the scenes at Anfield, and one revelation highlights Klopp’s belief that he could return the glory days back to Liverpool.

“Once Liverpool steered past a taxing Champions League qualifier against Hoffenheim last August, Klopp believed his squad possessed enough blitz to be spellbinding on the European stage,” Reddy writes.

“In fact, he had already predicted as much to Philippe Coutinho in December 2016, telling the playmaker that when the club were back amongst the elite, it would be as opposition torturers not tourists.”

It’s a prediction that looks pretty accurate now.

Nobody wants to play against Liverpool in the Champions League, a mixture of Liverpool’s players and their fervent support combining to make a problematic opposition.

Reddy goes on to claim that Liverpool’s recruitment team received a number of calls after the 5-0 win against Porto in February from agents eager to offer their clients to the Reds.

Suddenly, Liverpool are the club that players wants to be a part of.

Coutinho viewed Barcelona as an upgrade, and that makes a lot of sense, but it would be interesting to know his thoughts on Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final.

The report adds that such is Liverpool’s standing these days that Julian Brandt and Ryan Sessegnon both rejected moves to Merseyside because they wondered how they would make the starting XI.

That’s not a bad problem for any club to have.
