Wayne Rooney will still be keeping an eye on Manchester United from his new home in the United States.

The club's all-time top goalscorer turned his back on the Premier League after a final season with Everton, choosing to unwind his career in the MLS with DC United.

Nevertheless, his association with United looks set to continue perpetually and no more so with the Red Devils also find themselves on American shores.

Jose Mourinho's men have made a disappointing start to their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Club America and a thoroughly forgettable 0-0 result with San Jose Earthquakes.

Yet one of the biggest talking points of the tour so far has concerned Antony Martial and not always for positive reasons.

Doubts over Martial's future

Although there were few star performers for United on Sunday night, supporters were in agreement that Martial had something of a nightmare in Santa Clara.

Fans are desperate for the Frenchman to succeed at Old Trafford but his performances under the reign of Mourinho have failed to impress.

That's not to mention the doubts over his future with Martial's agent effectively confirming that he wanted to leave the club in a fiery interview.

The likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Juventus are all believed to be interested.

Rooney drops his verdict on Martial

But what does such a prominent United figure like Rooney think about it all?

Well, the 32-year-old appeared for an interview with talkSPORT on Monday and dropped his honest opinion on the matter, noting: "Ability-wise, he's just incredible.

"It's just how do you get the best out of him? Knowing Anthony the way I know him, if you can get the best out of him, he's up there with the best in the league.

"Sometimes t's difficult to get to know him as a person and as a character because of the way he is, but I think you just need to keep him happy."

And when asked about Thierry Henry, Rooney simply answered: "Yeh I think Anthony could be at that level."

It's certainly high praise from Rooney and noteworthy considering he played alongside Martial for two seasons, getting to know him as a player and a person.

There can be little doubting that Martial has raw talent in abundance and he showed that during his debut campaign at Old Trafford.

Whether or not Mourinho is doing a good job at keeping him happy, though, remains to be seen and the comments of his agent aren't exactly promising.

Reluctantly, it seems fans are coming to the conclusion that Martial could be better off at a different club.

A move to the right team could see him kick on, flaunt his remarkable natural talent and show why United signed him in the first place.
