Manchester United are lining up Greek sensation Sotiris Ninis as a replacement for veteran midfielder Paul Scholes.

Ninis is one of the hottest prospects in European football and is also understood to be a target for Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

According to talkSPORT, the 20-year-old has been earmarked as a successor for United legend Scholes, who is currently enjoying a vintage start to the season for the Red Devils.

Ninis currently plies his trade with Panathinaikos, and was one of the few Greek players to shine at a disappointing World Cup for the Ethniki.

The playmaker joined Panathinaikos aged just 14 after spending time in the Apollon Smyrni academy.

He has since gone on to make almost 70 appearances for the Shamrock and is currently contracted to the Athens club for two more seasons.

This contract allegedly contains a release clause of 10 million euros should he transfer to another European club, with the fee rising 17 million euros if he were to remain in Greece.

Last month The Mirror reported that United were set to tie up a deal worth £9.6 million for the midfielder.
