Good news for Crystal Palace as midfield maestro Darren Ambrose’s leg injury is not as bad as first thought.
Ambrose had Palace’s medical staff seriously worried, and it was believed he had suffered a break in his leg after an injury earlier on in the season.
It was feared he could miss months, but after closer inspection it has been revealed to be not as serious as originally feared and Ambrose could be fit for the Eagles within three weeks.
The injury has been diagnosed as severe bruising, and the news comes as a big relief to manager George Burley, who is expecting Ambrose back by the end of the month.
Ambrose is a key member of Palace’s team, and already has one goal to his name this season. His 21 goals last season ensured Palace’s survival last year and Palace fans will be keen to see him in an Eagles shirt sooner rather than later.
More good news comes in the form of a five month loan deal for Hull City defender Anthony Gardner, which was completed just hours before the August transfer window slammed shut on Tuesday.
Six foot five inch Gardner will link up with the Eagles until January, after being left on the bench for the Tigers’ last three matches of this season.
Gardner signed for Hull City in 2008 for a then club record fee of £2.5 million, but was recently dropped by manager Nigel Pearson following the Tigers 4-0 loss at Milwall. He was deemed surplus to requirement after Hull’s signing of Cardiff City’s Anthony Gerrard.
He will hope to feature regularly for Palace in this loan spell and he may help to sure up the Eagles leaky defence which saw them concede three goals against Scunthorpe in their last outing.
With captain Paddy McCarthy injured against Scunthorpe, Gardner should go straight into the team for Palace's next match against Reading and having a proven defender with Premier League experience will prove a big boost for the Crystal Palace squad.
