When LeBron James decided to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers, it left them in a very odd spot.Without James, they might very quickly decline from a contender to a pretender with their current roster. But, there are complexities with a partial or full rebuild. With so many lucrative contracts on the books and since Cleveland isn’t exactly a typical free agent destination, the Cavaliers had to make up their mind pretty quickly this offseason.Luckily for the Cavs, All-Star Kevin Love is still there. Not only that, but he just received a giant vote of confidence from the organization.

A massive extension

On Tuesday, it was announced that Love agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension. His overall deal is now five years for $145 million. The new deal will kick in after he earns $24.1 million next season, per Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Shortly after it was announced, Love posted the following picture to his Instagram account:

It’s worth noting that Love didn’t take the full maximum amount. Per Wojnarowski and Windhorst, he took $8 million less than the full max in order for the Cavs to keep some cap flexibility on the back end of the deal (when he's in his mid-30s).

Overall, he’s glad to be a part of Cleveland’s future.

"I'd like to thank the Cleveland Cavaliers organization, [owner] Dan Gilbert and Koby Altman for having their trust in me and believing in our future," Love said during a signing ceremony at Quicken Loans Arena. "When I got traded here a few years back, I was committed to being here long term and I was committed to our culture, excellence in playing the game of basketball. And I think who we have on our team and who we have moving forward really reflects that.”

LeBron offered his congratulations on Twitter.

The team is also thrilled to move forward with him at the center of their plans.

"We are very excited to announce Kevin's long-term commitment to the Cavaliers and Cleveland," Altman said in a statement. "This quickly became a partnership the second we began these discussions. Collaboration and winning matter greatly to Kevin and that was reflected in this extension. … Kevin’s talent and character are both at a very high level and he has earned his role at the center of what we want to do moving forward.”

Love will be in line for increased usage on the offensive end of the floor this season. Therefore, he has a real chance of putting up the same type of insane individual numbers that he did with the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in his career.
