Poor Roma. The Italian club have done some fine business in the transfer window, signing Justin Kluivert and Javier Pastore. But there have been some low points, too. They’ve lost a world-class goalkeeper in Alisson, albeit in exchange for a comforting sum of £67 million. And they’ve been left with egg on their face following the Malcom ordeal.Roma were all set to complete a move for the Brazilian winger from Bordeaux. They had even announced on Twitter than an agreement had been reached to sign the 21-year-old.

Why Roma didn't sign Malcom

Roma fans waited for Malcom at the airport - and then Barcelona swooped.

It was unclear just how the transfer was developing until the Blaugrana confirmed on Twitter that Malcom had indeed signed for them.

So, just how did it all come about?

Roma sporting director Monchi has given his version of events, and he’s admitted the Giallorossi are now considering legal action.

Monchi explains that plans were in place for Malcom to travel to Rome on Monday - he would arrive for a medical at 11pm.

But Barcelona made an increased offer at the last minute.

“I told [Bordeaux president Stephane Martin] that we had an agreement, we had made the deal, but he said that nothing had been signed and that, despite having exchanged some documents to be signed, nothing could be done,” Monchi said.

At 11pm, Roma submitted a new offer for Malcom that was more than Barcelona’s.

“The agents and the Bordeaux president told me that if all was agreed, today [Tuesday] we would be able to exchange the documents and the player would again be authorised to travel to Rome in the evening,” Monchi continued.

“Early [Tuesday] morning I spoke with Malcom’s agent, Fernando Garcia, who had a meeting with Bordeaux planned at 12pm to confirm everything was in place for the player to travel to Rome in the evening.”

Yet after that meeting, Monchi was apparently told that Bordeaux wanted another improved offer from Roma.

The Italian club were unwilling to enter an auction, negotiations ended there and Malcom went on to join Barcelona.

“Now, within the club, we are looking at our options and seeing if we have a legal case,” Monchi continued.

“It is true that nothing was signed, but there are many messages with the agents and their president that are at least worth being assessed.”

Barcelona may have their man, but this might not be the end of the saga.
