The nominations for the FIFA Men's Player of the Year award are in.Ten players have made the cut and will be judged on their performances between 3 July 2017 and 15 July 2018.Essentially, the entire 2017/18 season and the World Cup which followed. And it's hard to argue with the nominees, with the Premier League and La Liga dominating.Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Eden Hazard all make the cut from England. While Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, Luka Modric and Raphael Varane feature from Spain - Cristiano Ronaldo could be included, but he is now officially a Juventus player.Kylian Mbappe completes the list, with Neymar fairly missing out due to the fact he missed a large part of Paris Saint-Germain's season because of a serious foot injury. It's hard to argue against any of the nominees, isn't it?Well, apparently not according to one very high-profile journalist.Football fans may be familiar with the name Tancredi Palmeri, a regular beIN correspondent and he has caused a huge stir on Twitter. This is one to way to rile Messi's ever-growing fan base.

They don't come much more provocative in the football world, especially when it comes to Messi or Ronaldo - who have both won the award five times.

Needless to say, fans let Palmeri know their feelings. We've handpicked a selection of the best tweets and you can view all the fall out by visiting his official Twitter page.

FOOTBALL FANS REACT

Following the onslaught from fans, Palmeri decided to reply to a few stating that he had 'triggered' Messi fans.

In truth, it was simply an unnecessary tweet.

While Messi probably doesn't deserve to win the award given Barcelona's Champions League exit and his average World Cup, he simply has to be a nominee.

The Argentine picked up the European Golden Shoe for a record fifth time and was instrumental in Barca winning a domestic double.

If that doesn't make you one of the very best, then what does?
