Daniel Cormier said not too long ago that he plans on retiring from MMA on March 20, 2019, which is also his 40th birthday. This means he doesn't have a lot of time to squeeze in a few more fights before calling it a day.

Cormier already has one future opponent lined up in Brock Lesnar following their altercation in the middle of the octagon at UFC 226 after he had defeated Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight title.

As well as being the heavyweight champion, DC is also the UFC light heavyweight champion, meaning he will, at some point, have to defend that title or vacate it.

Lesnar Last

During a recent interview with MMAWeekly.com’s Damon Martin, Cormier made sense of all the moving pieces, stating that Lesnar will be the last MMA fight of his career.

However, he isn't sure if it will be his next fight in the octagon.

He said: “(Lesnar) will be the last one. He’ll be the last fight of my career. Will he be next? I don’t know. I hope so, but I’ve still got a belt to defend at 205 [pounds] to think about.

“It’s going to be difficult, but as a professional, you have to approach every fight the same exact way. I would prepare myself to win and to defend the title.

"Any time you’re in a UFC title fight, it’s a big deal, and for anybody to say they aren’t up for it is crazy. You’re a professional. You’re a fighter. You have to get up for these events.”

Cormier vs Lesnar isn't going to be taking place anytime soon since both fighters won't be able to step inside the octagon anytime soon.

DC is currently healing a broken hand, but he should be ready to fight well before Lesnar serves his U.S. Anti-Doping Agency suspension, which isn't over until January 2019.

With this in mind, it’s possible that Cormier might get a light heavyweight title defense by the end of 2018, before going on to face Lesnar next year in March.

As for who DC would defend the UFC light heavyweight title against, that is unclear, as Jon Jones is still looking at his own USADA suspension, while Volkan Oezdemir is currently sidelined with a broken nose.

Cormier doesn't want to fight Alexander Gustafsson either because he is disappointed in how entitled the fighter has become.
