Although it was only a pre-season friendly, Liverpool will gain plenty of confidence from their 2-1 victory over Manchester City ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.Jurgen Klopp’s side went 1-0 down just before the hour-mark when Leroy Sane broke the deadlock for City, but goals from substitutes Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane sealed the win for the Reds.Liverpool fans got to see a number of young players in both halves, including Ben Woodburn, Rafael Camacho and Caoimhin Kelleher. They also got to see 17-year-old Curtis Jones in action again, following his appearances against Tranmere, Bury, Blackburn and Borussia Dortmund this summer.Klopp handed the teenager a starting berth on the left-hand side of Liverpool’s attack, alongside Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana. He played for 62 minutes before coming off for Mohamed Salah, who promptly equalised after coming off the bench.Although he didn’t score or register an assist, Jones still managed to catch the eye of Liverpool fans, many of whom took to social media to express their thoughts about the youngster.

Liverpool fans feel the same way about Curtis Jones

The reaction from supporters to his performance against Guardiola’s side has been completely positive. Many of them think the Liverpool-born ace is a superstar in the making.

A video of Jones’s individual highlights from the match has now emerged and it’s hard to disagree with the assessment from Liverpool fans.

For such a young lad, he deserves credit for always wanting to get on the ball and drive at the City defence.

He kept getting himself into dangerous positions and didn’t look overawed by the occasion at all.

Who knows, maybe he will be this season’s breakthrough star at Anfield, just like Trent Alexander-Arnold was last term.

Even journalists feel the same way...

What Klopp has said about Curtis Jones

After the game against Dortmund, Klopp said of Jones: “He has to adapt to the group; the group have adapted already to him, he was in last year together with Rafa Camacho, another really young boy.

“They are different and the two boys before that came up like this were Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Woodburn. How they came in, they were really role models - not shy, but looking around, ‘What can I say?’ Curtis is different, Rafa is different.

“Curtis is a proper Scouser - I don’t know if I have the right words, but he is not shy to say a few things and probably that’s a surprise for one or two players! It’s easy, he accepts the rules of the group, there is no doubt about that.

“Football-wise he of course stepped up, that’s how it is. He is a tall boy but still very mobile, good at dribbling and stuff like that, but now we need to make sure he finds the right moment to pass the ball - and dribbling is not for dribbling, it’s to change the situation in a better way and then to pass the ball.

“But it’s easier to train that than to show somebody how to dribble, which is quite natural. It’s cool. Physical-wise [he is good] and has talent as well, but there is a long way to go.”

After his performance against City, there might be less far to go than Klopp thought just a few days ago.
