It looks as though Luke Shaw will be handed one final opportunity at Manchester United by Jose Mourinho. The relationship between player and manager has appeared strained at times during the previous two seasons, with Shaw often being criticised by Mourinho.Mourinho has constantly slammed Shaw’s attitude and has restricted Shaw’s role at Old Trafford to a fringe player - despite the club lacking a natural left-back.In April, Shaw produced a promising performance off the bench against Everton but, after the match, Mourinho claimed: “It was his body with my brain.”A month earlier, Shaw was dragged off at half-time in an FA Cup tie against Brighton. At the time, it looked as though there was simply no future for Shaw at United. However, the former Southampton full-back has worked hard this summer and, despite having just 12 months left on his deal, will be handed another chance by Mourinho.

MOURINHO SENT SHAW A TEXT MESSAGE

In fact, Mourinho sent Shaw a rather unexpected text in the off-season to encourage him.

After visiting Dubai on his own accord with girlfriend Anouska Santos to take part in a training camp, he received a little message from his manager.

“F**k, I've just opened it and I must look so weird now," he told Anouska. “But it was fine. I left it a little bit to reply because I didn't want to seem too eager. It was a breath of fresh air when he texted me. I wasn't expecting it.

“I spoke to him and it was really positive. It made me feel confident about the upcoming season, and that's why I'm working harder than ever because I want to prove to him that I can be here.

“That was one of the texts he sent me in the off-season. I know what you can do — you can be the best but you've just got to work on a couple of things.”

However, Mourinho may not have been too impressed when images of a bulky Shaw in Ibiza went viral in July.

However, the 23-year-old believes that the suggestion that he is ‘fat’ is unfair.

"People can say I'm fat but I know my own body," says Shaw. "I always look big because I'm bigger built. You could say a Wayne Rooney type of body. I worked hard, and not just for them.

"I wanted to get in the best shape for myself and that wasn't my best shape. Now I'm working harder than ever and for the first game of the season I want to look 10 times better than I did in that picture.

"You've just got to take it because there is always going to be negative and positive criticism, but both can make you stronger."
