Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant - Manchester United’s transfer business hasn’t been quite as exciting as in recent windows.

With the Red Devils kicking off the Premier League campaign in 14 days - and the transfer window slamming shut 24 hours prior to that - Jose Mourinho doesn’t have much time to make further signings.

However, it’s clear the Portuguese boss wants to sign a central defender before United’s opening game on Friday 10 August against Leicester.

Ironically, United are interested in signing Leicester defender Harry Maguire after his impressive World Cup.

Maguire is now rated at £65 million and the Foxes are expected to resist any offers from United, especially considering they’ve already allowed Riyad Mahrez to leave the club for Manchester City this summer.

Mourinho and United have only turned their attention to Maguire after they struggled to negotiate a deal with Tottenham for Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld is available for just £25 million next summer and the north London club have already lowered their asking price from £75 million to £60 million for the Belgian.

The 29-year-old has one year left on his current contract, with an option for a one-year extension that includes a £25m release clause for next summer, but talks over a new deal have continued to stall.

MAN UTD RESPOND TO SPURS' NEW £50M VALUATION

And now, according to Sky Sports, Spurs are asking Man Utd for £50 million for the centre-back.

A new deal at Spurs looks unlikely for Alderweireld, meaning they could well cash in this summer.

However, United have already responded to Spurs’ valuation.

According to the Sky Sports report, they still “do not share Spurs' valuation of a player with a year left on his current contract.”

It seems United’s search for a new centre-back will rumble on right up until August 9, when the transfer window closes for Premier League clubs.
