If you were to choose one player as a benchmark of Pep Guardiola’s influence on Manchester City, Raheem Sterling would be that player.

The change in the game of the attacking midfielder last season was a massive improvement and integral to the team’s success.

A lack of consistency in his first two years at City let the England star down, despite his ever-present positive running and movement.

Guardiola’s ability to raise his team to their highest level is legendary, and in the past year, Sterling’s progress under the Catalan has been nothing short of remarkable.

His tally of 18 Premier League goals last season saw him score more than the previous two campaigns combined, as he played a key part in their record 100-point haul.

The Etihad certainly seems to be the right place for Raheem Sterling.

Sterling and his representatives have been pushing for an improved contract after his stellar season, to put him on a financial par with the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero.

However, according to the Sun, the talks are in jeopardy.

Representatives of the player have been attempting to raise his salary from £170,000 a week to an eye-watering £250,000 a week.

Negotiations with City began before the World Cup yet were postponed until after his Russian adventure - Sterling’s team were hoping that a good performance from their man could secure his bumper deal.

England enjoyed their best tournament for 28 years – yet while Sterling played well, his failure to feature amongst the very best performers reportedly may cost him.

Sterling has two years left on his deal, and the club aren’t willing to allow him to go into the last 12 months without an agreement.

The World Cup appears to have solidified City’s decision to refuse Sterling’s wage demands, so if no agreement can be reached, Sterling may be sold next summer.

Pep Guardiola is said to be relaxed about the situation – it remains to be seen if it will be resolved.
