As much as La Liga President Javier Tebas claims that Ronaldo leaving “worries me 4 out of 10”, the reality is that his departure is a huge loss for the league.

Ever since his then world-record transfer from Manchester United, the Portuguese has been a genuine global phenomenon.

Both Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have racked up assists and goals on demand in the past decade – posting numbers of assists and goals not seen before and unlikely to be seen for some time after.

As much as Tebas can bluster about La Liga’s potential without Ronaldo, the fact remains many tuned in simply to see CR7 in action.

Ronaldo is clearly a massive loss, yet La Liga still has some very good, and very expensive players.

The top teams of La Liga are still generally seen as more complete sides than the bigger sides in the EPL – embodied by Spain’s domination of the later rounds of the Champions League and Europa League.

Logic would surely dictate that players for Spain’s top teams are worth more.

On the other hand, the Premier League’s improved television deal has seen clubs splashing the cash and breaking all sorts of spending records.

The question is then – is La Liga’s most expensive XI is more valuable than the EPL?

According to transfermarkt.com/ the answer, is no (at least for now).

With rumours of Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois moving to Real Madrid, amongst other gossip, the situation has time to change quickly.

For now though, La Liga’s most expensive XI is valued at €965 million, slightly less than the €1.005 billion value of the EPL XI.

La Liga: Jan Oblak (€70m); Dani Carvajal (€60m), Raphael Varane (€80m), Samuel Umtiti (€70m), Marcelo (€60m), Sergio Busquets (€80m), Toni Kroos (€80m), Lionel Messi (€180m), Antoine Griezmann (€120m), Gareth Bale (€90m), Marco Asensio (€75m).

EPL: David de Gea (€70m); Kyle Walker (€50m), John Stones (€55m), Virgil van Dijk (€50m), Benjamin Mendy (€40m), Kevin de Bruyne (€150m), Paul Pogba (€90m), N’Golo Kante (€80m), Mo Salah (€150m), Harry Kane (€150m), Eden Hazard (€120m).

The EPL value is mainly due to the sought-after trio of Salah, Kane, and De Bruyne, all valued at €150 million each.

Even with Lionel Messi unsurprisingly coming in as the most expensive player overall at €180 million, the La Liga team is less valuable overall.

Whilst both team’s values are hypothetical, it’s fair to say that Ronaldo’s huge transfer value could have made a difference.
