He earned himself a Performance of the Night bonus as well. This has to be the biggest win of The Diamond's UFC career, as it opens many options for him in the lightweight divison, and he explored a few of those options in his post-fight interview.

Flurry of strikes

Where You At Khabib?

Poirier called for a title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov, as he said post-fight: "Where you at, Khabib?

"Just look at my track record. Eddie Alvarez, former champ. Anthony Pettis, former champ. Justin Gaethje, former champ. Eddie Alvarez, former champ. That’s four champions in a row. What else do I have to do?"

The Diamond hasn't lost since squaring off against Michael Johnson in September 2016. He believes this is good enough for him to warrant a title fight vs Nurmagomedov.

However, things easily could have gone the other way, as Alvarez had a chance to beat Poirier when he had him pinned against the fence in a mount position with 1:42 left in the second round.

The referee broke the action though after the former UFC Lightweight Champion dropped a 12-to-6 elbow on The Diamond's shoulder.

The ref stood the pair back up, but less than a minute later, Poirier hit a knee to the body of Alvarez and followed it up with a series of never-ending strikes.

Poirier further explained in the post-fight press conference that he felt like he has earned a title fight, and that he's ready to step in if Khabib vs Conor McGregor can't be booked for later this year.

He said, according to MMAWeekly: “I’m not 100-percent sure. We’ve got to see the timeframe. This is a crazy, crazy sport. It might be two completely different guys fighting for that title in October. You never know.

"This last year has been insane. But hopefully that fight comes together. I don’t plan on taking long. I’m not taking a year off. I’m hitting my stride right now, I’m in my prime. I’m feeling the best I’ve ever felt. I want to keep growing on this.

“I do want a title shot, I feel like I’ve earned it. I’m next. I’ve paid my dues year after year in this gritty game. We’ll see. I don’t know the timeframe.”
