Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have done some fantastic business so far this summer.
The German has spent over £150 million as Naby Keita, Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri have all completed moves to the club.
But there are some that believe Liverpool’s team still needs strengthening.
Perhaps their biggest weakness is now at centre-back. Virgil van Dijk is one of the world’s best defenders, but uncertainty remains over his partner in defence.
Dejan Lovren has improved in recent times, but some are still unconvinced about his reliability.
And the notion that Liverpool need a centre-back intensified last week when Joel Matip sustained a leg injury against Borussia Dortmund.
Buying another centre-back to partner Van Dijk may be the final piece in creating a title winning side.
But does Jurgen Klopp feel that way? He was asked whether he plans to buy a centre-back this summer, and his answer was very interesting.
The German believes that there is no point buying one as of yet, as there is no defender available on the market with better quality than Joe Gomez.
When asked about whether he would strengthen the position, Klopp said: “Do you think we have to? This summer? No, I am happy with our players, to be honest, so I don’t see the need.
“When you see Joe Gomez playing in that role tonight as a central defender, he combines a lot of things you don’t find in the transfer market, to be honest.”
Interesting. Gomez is naturally a centre-back, but he has been deployed primarily as a right-back in the past few years.
He was given the chance to impress in the centre of defence against Manchester United, and he clearly impressed the Liverpool boss.
It seems Klopp’s words show he is confident in the youngster’s ability and that he is prepared to give Gomez more game time in his natural position.
Klopp did admit, however, that his mind could change going into the final days of the transfer window.
“I can’t see in the moment the need, but there are 12 days to go and a lot of things can happen,” he added.
“You ask me now and I say no, but maybe if you ask me tomorrow I will say something different.”
Although it is unlikely, Klopp is hinting he could go in for another centre-back if one comes available.
If not, it seems he is happy with Gomez and the other options he has in defence at this current time.
