Jose Mourinho is certainly not enjoying pre-season.After a fairly successful season in 2017/18 in which he guided Manchester United to second place, the Portuguese manager's side have entered a chaotic period.Their tour of the US has been littered with moans from Mourinho and players failing to live up to expectation. His perseverance with Matteo Darmian - who wants to leave - is so puzzling, while Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez have had to play as a striker partnership in all their games.Given the absence of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic, Mourinho has had to give his young stars more minutes than he wanted. But the way he spoke about the youth in his pre-season squad after the 4-1 loss to Liverpool on Saturday evening was simply not on.

“This is nothing to do with reinforcements,” he said of the heavy defeat. “The reinforcements are [Paul] Pogba, [Marouane] Fellaini, [Victor] Lindelof, [Marcus] Rashford, [Jesse] Lingard, [Nemanja] Matic, [Antonio] Valencia.

"These are reinforcements. This is not our team ... We started the game with almost half of the players who are not even going to belong to our squad on August 9. They will not be here.

“This is not our squad. Reinforcements, you mean players that I would like to buy, that’s another thing, but this is not my squad. This is not even half my squad, or 30% of it. So don’t look to this."

What a motivator...

When you compare it to Jurgen Klopp's comments on the same subject after the match, it paints a very ugly picture.

Of course, the Liverpool manager was in a buoyant mood after winning, but the difference is still damning.

“Yes, all the young boys who came on today are in really good shape this pre-season, to be honest.," Klopp said.

"They had little holes because of the intensity.

“Sheyi [Ojo] is a really confident boy as he showed tonight, not only around the penalty when he sent Daniel Sturridge away! You have to be really confident to do that!

“Pedro Chirivella in the No.6, a fantastic football player. Marko Grujic together with him organising the whole pitch pretty much.

“Curtis Jones played his first game as a full-back in front of 100,000 people – I would have been nervous, he wasn’t. Rafa Camacho plays a pre-season that is just fantastic, mostly as a full-back which he’d never played before, so they’ve learned a lot.

“Ben Woodburn is 100 per cent back, for example. How it is with young boys, from time to time the improvement doesn’t go day by day, but he has played such a good pre-season.

“Nat Phillips, my god – what a pre-season he has played! These boys are completely open. What we will do with that and when, we will see.”

The difference is clear. Mourinho said before the game that United were playing Liverpool's kids, but Klopp's starting XI had an average age of 25.

Mourinho's? 26, ouch.
