Geraint Thomas was inundated with messages of congratulations after effectively sealing the 2018 Tour de France victory on Saturday’s penultimate stage.
The Welshman protected his yellow jersey in the 20th stage time-trial from Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle to Espelette, meaning he will become the third British winner of the race after Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.
Here, Press Association Sport have taken a look at some of the tributes paid to the 32-year-old.
Former Wales rugby union captain Sam Warburton, who went to the same Cardiff school as Thomas, posted: “Absolutely awesome @GeraintThomas86! Thoroughly deserved, and couldn’t happen to a nicer guy #Legend”
Warburton himself has just announced his retirement from rugby, but he's clearly been keeping himself busy by watching the cycling.
Sir Chris Hoy posted a picture of Thomas among a cluster of Team GB members watching Wiggins in action six years ago and pondered: “2012 Olympic training camp in Newport, nervously watching Bradley about to seal Britain’s first ever Tour de France victory.

Cardiff Blues reflected on a great year for sport in the Welsh capital, posting: “What a year for sport in Cardiff!

Welsh rugby referee Nigel Owens wrote: “Llongyfarchiadau mawr i Geraint Thomas am ennill y ras Tour De France. Well done Geraint Thomas, all of Wales is hugely proud of you on this magnificent win.”
Former Olympic champion Joanna Rowsell Shand was thrilled for her former Team GB teammate, writing: “Absolutely over the moon!! Huge congratulations @GeraintThomas86 #TDF2018 ”

Former Wales footballer Owain Tudur Jones hailed Thomas’ feat as up there with the best, saying: “Am ymdrech ryfeddol a cwpwl anghygoel. Llongyfarchiadau enfawr @GeraintThomas86. What an incredible achievement by Geraint Thomas. One of the greatest ever performed by a Welshman.”
