Super Bowl LII was a night to remember for the victorious Philadelphia Eagles, but a night to forget for the New England Patriots. Many have pointed at the questionable decisions made by the Patriots on and off the field as the reason why the team lost Super Bowl LII earlier this year in February. One of those decisions was to not play Malcolm Butler, who had played 98 percent of the Patriots' defensive snaps during the 2017 season.Patriots head coach Bill Belichick ultimately made the call not to play Butler in the Super Bowl, and this lead to the defensive back's exit from the team through free agency this summer.

No Bad Blood

During an interview with ESPN, Butler revealed that, despite what happened at the Super Bowl, there is no bad blood between himself and Belichick.

Butler said: "No bad blood between me and Bill Belichick. One of the greatest coaches ever and I care about him, I know he care about me.

"And this a hurtful game sometimes and it can look different than what it is. But that's my guy. … I got a lot of respect for him."

Butler was sick with flu-like symptoms during the build-up to the Super Bowl and, as a result, fell behind a bit on the game plan and had a rough week in practice.

He said: "This the biggest game of the year, so you gotta shoot your best gun or your best shot. Preparation is the best way to win. And maybe they didn't see 100 percent, mentally or physically, Malcolm Butler that they usually see."

Eric Rowe ended up starting ahead of Butler in the Super Bowl, and then the rumours began as to why Butler was being benched.

Butler said: "It was real tough. Most the time I'm not gonna say anything, I'm just gonna chill, play football.

"I usually just swallow my L or take whatever the treatment dealt, whatever the situation. But it was getting out of hand. I had to say something."

Butler ended up released an emotional statement on social media addressing the situation two days after Super Bowl LII. Belichick meanwhile, called it strictly a "football decision."

While there is no bad blood between Butler and Belichick, the defensive back will have a chance to prove a point when the Patriots and the Titans play against one another next season on November 11 in Nashville.
