Liverpool have a good reason for omitting Simon Mignolet from training camp in France

His exclusion has prompted doubts about his future

Simon Mignolet's future at Liverpool is looking increasingly uncertain.

The former Sunderland goalkeeper lost his role as Liverpool's number one goalkeeper to Loris Karius last season.

And after not playing for the final few months of last season, Mignolet conceded in June that he would consider his future upon returning from the World Cup.

“I am going to look at my situation when I come back from the World Cup,” he said. “At this moment I have not been speaking to anyone at Liverpool because I have been trying to focus on Belgium.

"[The goalkeeping coach] John Achterberg sends me a text before every game, to see how I am and if I am fit, so I keep in touch with him.

“But I didn’t play in the last few months at Liverpool, so after the World Cup I will look at everything.

"I can’t say much more. I don’t know how long I will have off after the tournament. I need to speak to the manager about that.”

The chances of Liverpool selling the Belgian increased even further after Klopp decided to splash out £66.8 million on Alisson; leaving Mignolet as the third choice goalkeeper at the club.

And after his omission from Liverpool's training camp in France was announced earlier today, many thought it was almost certain that his time with the club was up.

But that is not necessarily the case.

The Liverpool Echo report that the Reds never had any intention of including Simon Mignolet in the squad for their pre-season training camp in France this week.

His exclusion has always been the plan following Mignolet's participation in the World Cup earlier this month.

He is, instead, expected to report back at Melwood on August 5 after a three-week break.
