The 2018-19 season hasn’t even begun yet but the situation is already starting to feel ominous for Jose Mourinho. The revered Portuguese coach, who is entering his third campaign as Manchester United manager, doesn’t seem particularly happy with life right now. He’s annoyed he hasn’t been able to sign all of his key summer transfer targets, he fears for the start of the season as he’ll be without several first-teamers who played at the World Cup, and his ‘erratic behaviour’ is concerning members of the United squad who fear their boss might be about to kill their season. This is according to multiple sources, including the Telegraph, who claim United’s players currently feel like they’re treading on eggshells around their manager.Mourinho has also criticised Anthony Martial for failing to fly back to the USA straight after meeting his healthy newborn son, Swan, for the first time. Martial, who wants to leave United this summer, is understood to be angry with Mourinho’s recent comments. As things stand, Mourinho is currently the bookmakers’ favourite to become the first Premier League manager to lose his job this season.Things have often turned sour for the 55-year-old during his third season at different clubs - and history might be about to repeat itself at Old Trafford.

Lee Grant: What Mourinho told players after Liverpool loss

Mourinho has had little to smile about in pre-season. Disappointing draws against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes were followed by a penalty shoot-out victory over AC Milan.

However, Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to fierce rivals Liverpool in Michigan worsened his mood yet further.

Or so it seemed to journalists and fans who saw his post-match press conference, anyway.

Interestingly - and this probably will surprise many people - Mourinho’s reaction inside the United dressing room was very different.

Lee Grant, the 35-year-old goalkeeper who joined United from Stoke City earlier this month, revealed what his new manager told the players after the final whistle.

“There doesn’t seem to be any turmoil from the inside,” Grant is quoted as saying by Bill Rice from BBC Radio Manchester. “The manager seems happy. His demeanour around the squad seems great.

“We were beaten disappointingly by Liverpool. His attitude afterwards was very positive. He told us not to worry about it. He understands the situation we are in with players to come back into the squad.”

Grant: Mourinho wants to win

Given his demeanour in his press conference, it’s hard to imagine Mourinho was "very positive" after watching his side get played off the park by Jurgen Klopp’s men - but Grant insists that was the case.

“I have worked with a lot of managers in my time,” United’s new third-choice keeper added. “You can see from the passion he is trying to get across to the squad, he wants to win. He breeds winner. We have seen that across the course of his career. I am sure we will see that again this season.

“Everybody is here pulling their weight and looking forward to and preparing for what is going to be a tough season.”

Perhaps things aren’t quite so worrying inside the Man Utd camp after all.
