Manchester United players have reacted to Jose Mourinho's rant after Liverpool defeat

AC Milan v Manchester United - International Champions Cup 2018

Jose Mourinho shocked Manchester United fans with his post-match interview on Saturday night.

After a bitterly disappointing 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in Michigan, the United boss went on a completely unexpected rant by taking aim at the club's transfer policy and everyone from Anthony Martial to Antonio Valencia.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho lamented: "We are playing here just to try to survive and to have some not-very-ugly results. Alexis is the only attacking player we have.

"We don't have wingers, we don't have strikers. He's the only one who is here, and the poor man is there trying his best, with the frustration of somebody that wants more.

"The atmosphere was good, but if I was them I wouldn't come. I wouldn't spend my money to watch these teams.

"The referees were called by the baseball federation, they thought it was a baseball game and they had to deal with a soccer game."

It was pretty spectacular and the rant went on for much longer, leaving many to suggest it delivered a more damning blow than the result against Liverpool itself.

If nothing else, it won't give the younger players much in the way of confidence going into pre-season friendlies with the small matters of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

How Man Utd players reacted

And reports on Monday night suggested that his rant has had a devastating effect on the United squad as a whole, not the news supporters want to hear on the eve of the new season.

According to the Telegraph, 'Man Utd players fear manager's erratic behaviour will kill their season.'

They have understanding that certain squad members feel they're 'treading on eggshells' at the club and are wary of being the next player to upset Mourinho.

The squad were bemused by the decision to criticise a player as loyal as Valencia - who had just been named club captain - and his relationship with Martial is believed to be at 'breaking point.'

Sources have also informed that the departure of Rui Faria is slowing taking its toll, with Mourinho's mood swings proving stronger in his absence and staff members wishing he could return.

Meanwhile, a source told the Daily Mail: "Jose’s mood is dragging the whole tour down.

"He’s clearly not happy with Ed Woodward and everyone else is suffering because of it," with another informant believing the players are finding his behaviour 'exhausting.'

There are sections of United fans who are becoming increasingly frustrated with Mourinho and it's actions like this that are fuelling their discontent.

Whether or not Mourinho is trying to to instil an 'us against the world' mentality or not, he has caused a media storm to the extent he was one of the favourites for the sack this season.

It's difficult to see his comments in pre-season being anything but a negative for the Red Devils going into a potentially make-or-break campaign for him.

As long he cuts out the rants and brings in the silverware, though, he could still turn things around.
