Manchester United haven't been particularly busy in the transfer market this summer.

Jose Mourinho has completed three signings, although only Fred is likely to be a first-team regular this season.

The Brazilian midfielder joined in a £52m deal from Shakhtar Donetsk and impressed in his first start against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Diogo Dalot, 19, joined from Porto while Lee Grant, 35, arrived from Stoke City as a back-up goalkeeper.

Mourinho reportedly wants Ed Woodward to sign a centre-back before the August 9 transfer deadline.

Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire are top of his shopping list but Tottenham and Leicester are both refusing to budge on their asking price.

It's been a frustrating summer for Mourinho - and he hasn't been shy to voice his dissatisfaction to the media.

United in for Kovacic

According to Marca, Man United have now launched a €60m bid for Real Madrid's Croatian international Mateo Kovacic.

The talented 24-year-old midfielder reportedly wants to leave the Santiago Bernabeu after finding first-team chances hard to come by.

Kovacic - who has been linked with Manchester City and Chelsea - managed only 10 La Liga starts last season.

Despite submitting a tempting offer, it appears unlikely that Kovacic will move to Old Trafford this summer.

Marca claim that Kovacic doesn't want to move to Man United because Mourinho's negative style of football doesn't "suit" him.

The Portuguese coach publicly criticised a number of his players last season - and Kovacic may have taken note.

It's not a good sign when a player who is desperate for a move has no interest in joining.

He was part of Croatia's World Cup squad and is expected to link up with his Real Madrid teammates in the coming days.

New boss Julen Lopetegui wants to keep Kovacic in Madrid but the player will reportedly push for a transfer before the transfer window shuts.

"The problem is that it’s difficult for a young player to have continuity and without that I will never be able to show my potential," Kovacic previously told Marca.

"When I don’t play of course I’m not happy. I’ve enjoyed these three years in Madrid hugely, with incredible teammates, winning trophies.

"But I haven’t been completely happy because my contribution to all of this has not been the biggest and it’s something I want to change."

Evidently, Kovacic doesn't believe he'll be able to "show his potential" at Old Trafford.

Brazilian midfielder Andreas Pereira had been excellent in pre-season and he might fancy staking a claim for a place in Man United's midfield.
