Chris Sutton gives his honest opinion about Rangers potentially signing Kyle Lafferty

  • Rob Swan

Steven Gerrard has already made a pretty big impact at Rangers since his appointment was confirmed in May.

The Liverpool legend has devoted all of his time to overhauling the squad and improving his new players’ fitness levels.

He feels that Celtic’s superior fitness levels is one the primary reasons they’ve been able to win seven Scottish league titles in a row – and he’s made it his mission to ensure Rangers went into the 2018-19 campaign fitter than ever before.

It’s been a case of so far, so good for Gerrard. Rangers have played five matches under the 38-year-old – including three Europa League qualifiers – and the Scottish giants are yet to concede a single goal.

Gerrard’s men take on Croatian side Osijek again on Thursday night before their Scottish Premiership opener against Aberdeen on Sunday.

Unlike in England, the transfer window in Scotland doesn’t close until August 31 – which means Gerrard has a bit longer to improve his squad ahead of what promises to be another gruelling campaign.

Top of his wish-list, at the moment, is Kyle Lafferty. The Northern Ireland international, who played for Rangers between 2008-2012, has been strongly linked with a return to Ibrox in recent days.

Sutton gives his opinion about Lafferty to Rangers

However, former Celtic striker-turned-pundit Chris Sutton hasn’t held back with his views about the 30-year-old forward.

He reckons Gerrard would be taking a huge risk signing Lafferty and fears signing the controversial Northern Irishman has the potential to unsettle his new-look squad.

“The signing of Lafferty would be underwhelming and he’s not as good as Alfredo Morelos,” Sutton is quoted as saying by the Daily Record. “I know Morelos is criticised for his finishing, but he’s still a handful.

“Lafferty is a bit of a nutter at times and although he may turn out to be a good influence, why would you throw a bit of a timebomb into the dressing room at this stage when everything is going smoothly?”

Reaction on social media to Sutton’s comments

Strong words there from Sutton, who clearly doesn’t feel that Lafferty’s personality would benefit either Gerrard or Rangers.

Needless to say, Sutton’s comments have caused a stir on social media. While some people reckon he’s spot on about the potential impact Lafferty might have at Ibrox, others think he’s talking nonsense.

Aside from his personality, Sutton also wonders whether Lafferty is good enough for Rangers…

Lafferty scored 19 goals in 41 games for Hearts last season and could be a useful asset for the Gers if he knuckles down.

But is Chris Sutton right about his character? Have your say below.
