Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool enjoyed a tremendous Champions League campaign last season.

The Merseyside club had very little expectations going into the competition, but they embarked on a run that very few would have imagined.

After cruising through the group stages, they then beat Porto, Manchester City and Roma en route to the final.

Their run would eventually be put to an end by Real Madrid in the final, who defeated them 3-1.

It goes without saying that Liverpool will be looking to go one better in the 2018/2019 season.

And, their chances of going far in the competition were boosted by Basel's loss to PAOK on Wednesday night.

Liverpool had been without Champions League football for a few seasons before their run to the final a few months ago.

Therefore, they started last season's competition in pot three, meaning a potentially harder draw in the group stages.

And, although they got to the final last season, they still haven't earned enough ranking points to be promoted from the pot.

However, they could well find themselves in pot two next season, after all.

Basel's elimination from the competition means Liverpool are one team away from being promoted to pot two.

The Reds now need Benfica to be eliminated from qualifying to be promoted to the higher pot.

The Portuguese outfit will place Fenerbahce in the third qualifying round, and will then have  to come through another tie to make it to the group stages.

By being in pot two, Liverpool would enhance their chances of an easier group stage draw and would avoid the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk and Napoli.

Liverpool fans will now be hoping that the Portuguese side crash out of qualifying to make their road to the Champions League final next season easier.

Meanwhile, Adam Lallana feels as if Liverpool now need to start winning trophies under Klopp.

“It’s a really exciting time,” said Lallana. “I’m delighted to be at a top club like Liverpool that are going to be challenging for trophies again and I’m looking forward to playing for England again.

“For my club, I just want to take the next step now. We’ve been in a few finals that we haven’t been victorious in and that needs to change.

"We’ve got all the ingredients there, the experience we’ve gained and the squad we’ve put together, the signs are really good for us to go the next step.”
