Manchester United’s summer hasn’t exactly gone to plan - and Jose Mourinho has made sure everyone is well aware.

In terms of the transfer window, the Red Devils have only signed back-up goalkeeper Lee Grant, 19-year-old Diogo Dalot and Fred.

And with plenty of their senior players still slowly returning from their World Cup exertions, Mourinho wasn’t able to call upon many stars as they travelled to the United States for pre-season.

They kicked off their friendlies with draws against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes, while they triumphed on penalties against AC Milan after drawing 1-1.

They were then thrashed 4-1 by Liverpool which led to a rather extraordinary rant by Mourinho about…well, pretty much everything.

The Portuguese boss appeared to slam his youngsters and suggested that many of the players on this tour won’t play any part this season.

“This is not our team, this is not our squad,” he insisted. “Not even 30 per cent of it. We start the game with almost half the players who are not even going to belong to our squad on August 9.”

Harsh.

But United finished off their time in America with a 2-1 win against Real Madrid which will no doubt leave Mourinho feeling a bit more positive about his players.

United fans may not have been able to watch all five of their friendlies across the pond due to the time difference so how have each of them fared this summer?

Well, Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst - who has been in America for United’s tour - has rated each player out of 10 and produced a line or two about each of them.

EVERY MAN UTD PLAYER RATED FOR THEIR PRE-SEASON

Here are his ratings:

David de Gea
"Linked up for the Real Madrid game and was steady despite the Champions League winners regularly threatening. 6"

Lee Grant
"Impressed in games and on the training pitch. Joel Pereira appreciated his professionalism and experience. 7"

Joel Pereira
"Made some decent stops but was over-confident with his squandered penalty against AC Milan. 6"

Antonio Valencia
"Played less than an hour and had ‘too much holiday’, in Mourinho’s words. 3"

Matteo Darmian
"Enjoyed plenty of playing time as the only established right-back. Looked uninterested up until a creditable display against Madrid. 5"

Timothy Fosu-Mensah
"One of the few positives in the Liverpool defeat. Vinicius Junior embarrassed him but he recovered and Fosu-Mensah’s defending was often secure. 7"

Axel Tuanzebe
"Looked awkward in a back three and is in need of a season-long loan. 5"

Chris Smalling
"Missed the last two games through injury and was shaky in the AC Milan draw. Might miss out on starting the season. 5"

Luke Shaw
"Effectively had a free run at the left-back role but suffered a few wobbles. Solid, if unspectacular. 6"

Andreas Pereira
"Played the most minutes on what could be remembered as a breakthrough tour. Scored a stunning free-kick against Liverpool. 8"

Ander Herrera
"Took time to get going but was particularly proactive against Real Madrid and scored the winner. 6"

Fred
"Was eager in his brief bow against Liverpool and enjoyed an accomplished first start in the win over Real Madrid. 7"

Scott McTominay
"Might have dropped down the midfield pecking order in the wake of Pereira’s progress. Barely impressed despite plenty of game-time. 5"

James Garner
"Didn’t disgrace himself in a risk-aversive start against San Jose. Got to come on and see out the game with Madrid. 6"

Juan Mata
"Had to double as a striker in the wake of Anthony Martial’s departure and developed an encouraging telepathy with Alexis Sanchez. 7"

Anthony Martial
"Was woeful in his two appearances before he left for the birth of his son. His partner and baby's health was his priority but Martial’s attitude was poor before the tour. 3"

Alexis Sanchez
"Stepped up and showed his class which was rarely seen last season after joining from Arsenal. 8"

Tahith Chong
"Excelled in the opening draw with Club America but was overawed in his only start against San Jose. Restricted to cameos in the remaining games. 6"
