WWE is continuing to try to sign top independent wrestlers.

It seems like every few months WWE has been announcing that they’ve signed a new talent from the independent wrestling scene.

WWE announced the signings of names like former Ring of Honor World Champion Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, Bobby Fish, Donovan Dijak, Lio Rush and Shayna Baszler just last year.

In June 2012, WWE ceased operating Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), its developmental promotion in Tampa, Florida and began running all of its developmental events and operations at Full Sail University under the WWE NXT banner.

While its primary purpose is to serve as a developmental division for WWE, the promotion has come to be viewed by wrestling writers and fans as its own distinct entity as it serves as a third brand complementing Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live.

While it was believed that Triple H would be an executive in WWE, it was pretty much ruled out that he would be the guy in control of everything. Triple H even went on record by saying that he didn’t want to wear a tie and suit.

However, that all changed when McMahon pushed for his son-in-law to slowly but surely become someone he could lean on not only with creative but business related things.

Before NXT, which Triple H created, WWE had OVW and other developmental brands to get talents that they saw as draws ready for the big stage. At the time, the indie scene was a totally different place than it is right now.

Triple H believed that they needed to build within instead of reach out to other promotions and grab their talent. Thus, NXT was born, and later WWE created the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.
Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE officials are interested in signing two Lucha Underground stars - Pentagon Jr. and Fenix - as the longtime pro wrestling journalist wrote the following:

“There’s been overtures to Fenix and Pentagon Jr.,” wrote Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer. “Even though as far as I’ve heard both still have three seasons left on their Lucha Underground deals.”

It should be noted that their deals with Lucha Underground require them to prioritize Lucha Underground tapings throughout 7 seasons and the show is in the middle of season four.
