Liverpool's strength-in-depth is suddenly quite remarkable thanks to the additions of Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Alisson.

Take a look at the Reds' XI when Jurgen Klopp took over and it's almost unrecognisable to the side that will be starting the new Premier League season against West Ham on August 12.

There was a time when the German boss was not nearly so blessed, with the impressively versatile James Milner having to fill in at left-back two seasons ago.

It's one of football's great ironies that amid all the club's spending, it is a man who cost just £8million from Hull City - Andy Robertson - who is proving himself as the answer to arguably their biggest problem position.

However, back when Alberto Moreno could no longer be relied upon and Liverpool were yet to find a solid replacement, Milner obliged despite admitting he wasn't entirely happy about having to move from central midfield.

Moreno made countless errors before Klopp eventually resorted to drastic measures, even if Milner actually fared quite well.

In an interview in the latest issue of FourFourTwo magazine, the former England international recalled the moment his manager put the idea to him ahead of a Europa League tie against Manchester United.

Milner's response was brilliant

"I think the first time I had to play at left-back was at Manchester United in the Europa League," he said, quoted via Sports Joe.

"Alberto Moreno was injured and the manager gave me a choice: did I want to play at left-back or right-back?

"My answer was, 'That's like asking which one of these guys do you want to spend a night with your missus?!'

"His English wasn't that good then, so I think it went over his head!"

Since when did Milner get so funny? Jokes aside, it was admirable that the 32-year-old was willing to chip in and help his team where many players would have been uncomfortable.

The game at Old Trafford finished 1-1, with Liverpool progressing thanks to a 3-1 aggregate scoreline, and the makeshift defender evidently did enough for Klopp to persist with him.

You get the feeling Klopp is going to have no such problems this season.
