Lucas Torreira is arguably the most exciting of the four signings that Unai Emery has made in the summer.

Sokratis Papastathopoulous offers experience in defence while Petr Cech now has competition in Bernd Leno.

Both are shrewd additions but neither will get the fans out of their seats.

Matteo Guendouzi has enjoyed a fine pre-season but there are doubts as to how much action the 19-year-old will get in the first team this campaign.

As for Torreira, Arsenal fans believe he can be their very own N’Golo Kante.

The Gunners paid £26.5 million for the 22-year-old, who shined for Uruguay at the World Cup.

His combative style is exactly what Arsenal need and he could be a revelation in north London.

Torreira scouting report

Supporters got their first glimpse of the former Sampdoria man in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Lazio on Saturday.

Torreira was handed an extended break following the World Cup and he only started training with his new teammates on Monday.

So it was quite surprising to see the midfielder start the match - many expected he would feature for the final half hour.

But Torreira played for an hour, and journalist Charles Watts has offered a scouting report on his performance.

“After a quiet start to the game, Torreira gave us a reminder of the type of play that impressed us so much during the World Cup,” Watts wrote.

“Marco Parolo was running away from him with the ball, but the Uruguay star chased him back, put him under pressure and turned over possession with a neat challenge.

“It was nothing spectacular, but that is exactly what he will be in the Arsenal side to do.

“He needs to be that added layer of protection for the defence, that annoying wasp who refuses to be batted away when the opposition attempt to launch an attack.

“And he was exactly that throughout the first half. Torreira was solid, he was disciplined and he was tidy.

“He’s not an imposing presence in front of the back four, but he’s the type of midfielder who you can tell is going to frustrate rival teams because he is just not going to go away.

“And for someone so small, he has an impressive leap. Arsenal’s No.11 went into one aerial challenge looking like he would come off second best, but he left the Lazio man down on the turf after a clash of heads.

“Torreira raced off after the ball clearly a bit dazed, but still on his feet. It was an impressive show of physicality from the new signing.”

Watts continued by noting that Torreira was running at about 60 per cent.

And in an encouraging sign-off, he suggested the £26.5m arrival will be a key man for Arsenal this season.
