Manchester City picked up where they left off by beating Chelsea 2-0 to claim the Community Shield.

Pep Guardiola’s side were a class above at Wembley Stadium and prevailed thanks to Sergio Aguero’s brace.

For Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, he will have learned a lot from the encounter.

First off, the level required to compete with the very best in England.

And it was also an opportunity to learn more about his squad.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was Chelsea’s best player. Fans are desperate to see more of the 17-year-old this season.

But it was a rough afternoon for Alvaro Morata, Marcos Alonso, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro, all of whom disappointed.

Ferdinand's thoughts on Morata

Morata’s struggles from last season continued and he was hauled off with 20 minutes remaining after making little impact on the match.

The Spanish striker is clearly lacking confidence and Rio Ferdinand dropped the truth on him with his comments at full-time.

Ferdinand believes opposing defenders simply aren’t scared when they come up against Morata.

“He didn’t seem to have the heart for it,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport. “He didn’t seem too interested.

“Looking from a centre-half’s point of view, playing against this Chelsea team, he doesn’t really scare you.

“Unless you get the ball wide and cross the ball wide, where he has cute movement, I don’t think he’s effective.

“[Olivier] Giroud is fantastic when you get the ball wide and he can interlink with the midfielders and runners.”

Ferdinand never would have said such a thing about Diego Costa.

Costa was a nightmare to play against; he loved the battle.

Morata, though, just doesn’t look up for it.

And that’s a recipe for disaster in a league as tough as the Premier League.

There isn’t long for Sarri to bring in a new striker - the transfer window shuts on August 9 - and he could be left with Morata, Giroud, Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham as his strikers.

Compare that to Man City, who started Aguero and introduced Gabriel Jesus in the second half, and the situation becomes that much bleaker.

Chelsea fans have to keep reminding themselves about the imminent return of Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante.
