For the past decade, Formula One has been dominated by three superteams: Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

They have combined to win every race dating back to the second race of the 2013 season.

In a stunning move that has shocked the F1 world, 29-year-old Daniel Ricciardo has chosen to leave Red Bull at the end of the 2018 season and move to Renault.

Ricciardo is a seven-time race winner and regarded as one of the best drivers in the field, and he’s taking a leap of faith to a team with a top finish of fifth in 2018.

Ricciardo has been in the Red Bull system for his entire F1 career, but had been linked with potential moves to Ferrari and Mercedes in recent months.

Instead of agreeing a deal to join one of the top two teams, the mercurial Australian will partner Nico Hulkenburg at Renault, a team that returned to F1 in 2016.

Red Bull team principle Christian Horner clearly does not hold the French outfit in high regard, as he joked with Ricciardo in the video below at the 2017 Brazil Grand Prix.

“Can you sing me a song or something?” Asked Ricciardo.

“You could always give us knock knock knockin’ on Renault’s door Daniel,” responded Horner.

Despite two race wins this season, including a victory in the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix, it’s been a frustrating season for Ricciardo at Red Bull.

He’s suffered four DNF’s and has finished off the podium in 10 out of 12 races.

It’s seemingly only a matter of time before 20-year-old Dutch phenom Max Verstappen takes over as Red Bull’s number one driver.

The F1 world will watch with intrigue and see if Ricciardo can make an impact at Renault.

The 29-year-old Australian certainly has the talent to compete with the best and has made a name for himself as one of the more aggressive drivers in Formula 1.

One large question remains, however, will Renault provide him with a competitive car that can challenge the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari next year?
