It hasn’t been the greatest of summers for Manchester United.

The Red Devils have played six pre-season friendlies and have registered just one win in 90 minutes - although that was against European champions Real Madrid.

They were also thrashed 4-1 by Liverpool in the United States.

Following their 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich on Sunday, Jose Mourinho pretty much summed up his side’s pre-season by saying: "Finally, it's over. Finally, such a difficult pre-season is over.”

While things on the pitch haven’t been great for United, things off the pitch haven’t been too harmonious either.

So far, they’ve only signed 35-year-old back-up goalkeeper Lee Grant, 19-year-old defender Diogo Dalot and Fred.

In addition, Mourinho has let rip at some of his current youngsters as well as more experienced duo Antonio Valencia and Anthony Martial.

On Valencia, Mourinho said: “Antonio Valencia came from holiday, I think too much holiday for him. His condition was not good when he came back.”

But things appear a bit more serious as far as Martial is concerned.

The Frenchman left the squad during their American tour due to the birth of his child.

And after a complicated birth, Martial remained in the UK much to Mourinho’s annoyance.

“Anthony Martial has the baby and after the baby is born – beautiful baby, full of health, thank God – he should be here and he is not here,” Mourinho said.

And when Martial wasn’t on the plane to Germany for United’s final pre-season friendly against Bayern, rumours were in overdrive.

Everyone was suggesting that Martial was set to be involved in a sensational swap deal with Chelsea and Willian.

However, that wasn’t the reason Martial didn’t play against Bayern.

Instead, according to ESPN, he stayed behind to undergo a double training session in order to get his fitness back.

They write: “Anthony Martial's future is also uncertain after he also failed to make the trip to Germany.

“He returned to training on Friday after leaving the tour of the United States and missing a week while he attended the birth of his son in Paris.

“Sources have told ESPN FC that instead of facing Bayern he was asked to undertake a double training session at Carrington.”

There we have it.

We do still have a few days for Martial to leave Old Trafford before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday night, though….
