Chelsea have spent a staggering amount of money on players since Roman Abramovich became the club’s owner back in 2003.The Russian billionaire’s arrival marked the start of a new era for the west London outfit, who have since won five Premier League titles, the same number of FA Cups, three League Cups, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Champions League.Abramovich’s riches have seen a number of superstars ply their trade at Stamford Bridge over the past 15 years including Eden Hazard, Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba.Chelsea have also paid an exorbitant amount of money to various managers as compensation after prematurely terminating their contracts.Antonio Conte’s departure earlier this summer was the ninth time a manager has been handed an eye-watering sum to leave the Bridge peacefully under Abramovich’s tenure.Maurizio Sarri is now the man in the hot-seat and the Italian coach’s reign began on Sunday with a 2-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Community Shield.Although neither team was at full strength, the performances suggest a significant gulf in class currently exists between the two Premier League title contenders.

Tweet shows Chelsea's last 29 signings

After the match, one Chelsea fan posted a tweet listing the club’s last 29 signings - and it’s sparked plenty of debate on social media.

The list features many more flops than hits and some fans believe this is evidence that the club’s recruitment policy is all wrong currently.

How many of the 29 have been genuine successes? N’Golo Kante, without question, and then perhaps Pedro, Marcos Alonso and Antonio Rudiger.

Olivier Giroud was also decent at the end of last season but is unlikely to be Chelsea’s first-choice striker this season.

Fan on Reddit rates the 29 signings

One Chelsea fan on Reddit has taken the time to rate the 29 signings - here’s how he sees it…

“God-Tier: Kante

“Good: Pedro, Luiz, Alonso, Batshuayi, Rudiger, Giroud (he was great end of last season), Jorginho, Begovic

“Decent: Amelia, Baba (never had a chance, was never bad per se), Kenedy, Bakayoko, Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Morata (1/2 good, 1/2 bad), Caballero, Barkley, Emerson, Green, Eduardo

“Bad: Hector, Miazga, Nathan, Pantic, Cuadrado

“Ugly: Pato, Falcao, Djilobodji”

He adds: “You can see that the glaring problem is that too many of them are just Decent, or plain Bad/Ugly. I'm sure people will also argue that even some of the ones I branded Decent (Baka, Morata, Zappa, Drinkwater) deserve to be considered Bad. Speaks volumes.”
