The Toronto Raptors made a roster move Monday, agreeing to a one-year deal with reserve center Greg Monroe, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

The contract is worth $2.2 million.

Monroe, who should slot in nicely behind starting center Jonas Valanciunas, is an above-average rebounder and a solid post player.

Nicknamed "Moose" for his presence in the paint, Monroe is entering his ninth season in the NBA.

The 28-year-old bounced around between three teams - the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns - last year, and averaged 10.3 points and 6.9 rebounds. He's not known for being a great defender, but can dazzle in the low post.

Monroe will attempt to fill the void left by Jakob Poeltl, who was part of the blockbuster deal that saw DeMar DeRozan and Kawhi Leonard swap jerseys. Poeltl provided energy off the Toronto bench last year, and blossomed at the defensive end of the floor towards the end of the season.

Toronto's superior bench was a major reason why the club claimed the top seed in the Eastern Conference last year, and with the addition of Monroe, the group should be even better this year, at least offensively.

Monroe was the No. 7 overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in 2010 out of Georgetown, and played his first five seasons with the Pistons before joining the Bucks on a free-agent deal in 2015.

It's been a whirlwind offseason for the Raptors, who fired the reigning Coach of the Year in Dwane Casey, traded their franchise player (DeRozan) and promoted assistant coach Nick Nurse to head coach, after bowing out to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the playoffs last year.

Still, the Raptors are projected to contend with the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers for the East title in 2018-19. Their success likely depends on the health of Leonard and his ability to assimilate into the current roster.
